For the last 24 hours, we have witnessed the life of one of the most influential women who touched the face of the world and changed millions of lives forever. This simple yet astonishing woman is no other than our beloved mother and friend, Mrs. Corazon “Cory” Aquino. One might be wondering, particularly those born before the 1st EDSA Revolution, why this woman made a commotion of not only grieving the nation but also the whole world.
On the onset of the EDSA Revolution and after Marcos was ousted from the seat of presidency, Mrs. Aquino, basically, had two choices. These choices were either to settle back to the ordinary life of housewife where she can take care of her children and prepare sumptuous meals for them or to pursue the risky and “troublesome” seat of presidency where she face myriads of national problems ranging from the economic and power failure crises to the unending efforts of military insurgents to detract her administration and, even, have her head on the platter. To top that up, the “noise” continues, after her administration, where she’ll remain under the eyes of the government and military for the rest of her life therefore compromising the quite life of an ordinary citizen that she had always desired. The typical housewife would predictably choose the comfortable and carefree life. But, the thing is, Mrs. Aquino was never an ordinary woman. She made the hard decision, instead, to be the President of The Philippines amidst the insurmountable problems she faced and the price she had to pay for the rest of her life to do the greater good not because she fully wanted to but because she believed she needed to do the right thing. With that decision, the rest was history. She faced seemingly impossible challenges but, with it, countered it with her courage, firmness and boldness which gave this nation and its people a glimmer of hope and change that will forever be in the world’s history books.
The life of Tita Cory, I believe, should go the same with us. In our life, there will be those moments where we are called to make decisions between what is easy and right, between what is comfortable and needed and between the life of shying away from life and opening oneself to the world. As Mrs. Aquino best exemplified it, the price you pay for a significant life is one where you do what is true and right even at the cost of your comfort, self interests and, even, your life. Let us, then, live our lives the way Mrs. Cory Aquino lived hers for by doing so we not only liberate our selves but also those who we are surrounded with.
Salamat, Tita Cory!
Mabuhay Tayo!
