When we hear the word Christmas, what usually come first in our minds are the familiar word of Santa Claus, Christmas tree, and presents. The world has come to accept Christmas as a time of the year for the masses to feel sentimental, celebrate with friends and family and, of course, get wasted. But aside from the superficiality of Santa Claus, mistletoe and presents, what really is the story behind the story of Christmas?
Plainly, Christmas is a time of the year when we celebrate the birth of a baby on a manger (thus, the word CHRIST-mas!) Knowing this, you can’t help but wonder why you only see Christmas trees, parrols, and presents when you pass through the streets of Cagayan de Oro or when you watch the TV. Indeed, the decorations and religiosity of Christmas are there but can you can feel or see the presence of the celebrant? It’s not surprising, therefore, to hear answers such as Santa Claus, holiday shopping and presents when you ask the typical person what comes in their minds when they hear the word “Christmas.” The thing is, we may have all these frosting and, still, miss the very essence of Christmas.
I would like to share three points about Christmas. First point, Christmas is a time when we evaluate and look back on how we lived our lives. We determine whether we have been naughty or nice. Secondly, based on our personal evaluation, we create resolutions on how we should live the rest of our lives. And lastly and most importantly, we reflect on the principles and values that our celebrant, Jesus Christ, lived by and commit to live with these principles and values. To enjoy the season is not bad. But enjoying it for the sake of enjoying without any thought whatsoever is like eating a very delicious junk food. It’s a delicious food but it’s still junk!
As I celebrate this season, my conviction of living a life of purpose and inspiration is further strengthened. I am confident that I’m celebrating this Christmas not only in terms of its religion but, more importantly, the ever dynamic spirit behind it.
Let us be strengthened to live out the principle of love in this time when we celebrate the humble and immense love of Bro.
Merry Christmas!
