Bo Sanchez recounted one story in his book entitled “Choose To Be Wealthy” where he was talking to a woman with large debts. He asked what her plans were to solve her debt problems. She said, “I’m buying lotto tickets.” Bo was about to laugh when he realized that it wasn’t a joke. The lottery was her only plan. When you ask a lot of poor people how they plan to get rich, they’ll tell you that they buy lotto tickets. You see, a lot of poor people rely on these types of contests to get them out of poverty. For the poor, the lotto is not a game. It’s their only hope.
A lot of us Filipinos are infected by the belief that our life is controlled by luck. And since a lot of us have bought to the idea that our life is controlled by something outside us, we don’t take responsibility on the way we live life and rely on foolish things such as tarot cards, zodiac signs and even the stars to live our life. It’s then not such a surprise to see a lot of people who are living poor quality lives who blame themselves for not being born lucky. These people have bought the idea that some people are just lucky and some are not. “Those successful people,” the say “are darn successful people because they’re too darn lucky.” People are either lucky or unlucky. It just happens they’re unlucky and, with that, they live miserable lives.
Ladies and gentlemen, I’ve got news for you: THERE’S NO SUCH THING AS LUCK.
Nope! Nadah! NOTHING! Luck is an excuse the masses of people use to excuse themselves of the poor way they live life. Luck is an excuse by a loser who can’t take responsibility of the way he lives life. For the only luck you get in life is the very thing you work with your hands and the responsibility you take with the way you live life.
If you look closely, all people who are truly successful and making a difference in the world are in the position they’re in not because of luck but because they have the right mindset and they make things happen and not wait for things outside them to provide them what they want. As the old saying goes, “the world makes a way to those who know what they want in life.” This is not a matter of luck but a matter of having the right mindset and a whole lot of work.
For winners, LUCK is when opportunity meets preparedness. Opportunity in itself is useless if one doesn’t know how to utilize it. To us, preparing can take in the form of preparing ourselves mentally, emotionally, physically and spiritually to take hold of the opportunities surrounding us. Winning in life is not a matter of luck but a matter of what you make it. How we live life is not in the hands of things outside us but it’s in our hands. The best way to live life is to make it.
My friend, it’s in your hands. Make your own luck and be lucky!
